Total volume for
22/23: 94,467lbs

Our total volume is up from 2021/22 from 48,625lbs to 94,467lbs. Your ongoing support has helped us grow this year. This has allowed an increase in partnerships with more doors opening for us to explore more origins and increase volumes with the producers, coops and exporters we already trade with, and further exploring opportunities to trade upstream where possible.

94,467lbs by partnerships

94,467lbs by contracts

This growth allowed us to increase our forward commitments to producing partners from approx 50% in 2022 to a little over 70%. Approximately 30% of our total volume was from green traders; 20,000lb is from Sucafina NA and COTACOF in Tanzania and is also forward contracted.

The remaining approx 8,000lb are SPOT purchases. These have been vital to keep coverage of blends and/or cover gaps in our Single Origin program as we moved into our second year of operation.

A portion of those spot purchases were made in Q1, 2023 to supply coverage for natural growth and shipping delays as we entered our second year of business. We also had increased the volume of coffees that are used in our blends to provide the same coverage that we anticipated needing in Q1, 2024

  • These are contracted and spot purchases we’ve made through the end of 2022 and throughout 2023. Both Spot and Forward Commitment contracts. All signed coffees are for the 22/23 harvest.

  • Where no intermediary is listed below; Idle Hands assumes responsibility of the partnership in place of typical green traders. This is responsibility of the relationship, quality and acceptance of all samples and financial agreements of pricing for green coffee, milling and export, import and carry fees. These direct relationships are assisted by an importer for the financing and logistics of each coffee.

  • Our average cost of transport from warehouses (typically from Continental Annex in Oakland) to our roastery is $0.27 per lb.

In a majority of these purchases, milling is included into the price of green coffee by the seller. This is often the case with the vertically integrated producer-up exporters we trade with.

This data is collected and donated to the Specialty Coffee Transaction Guide as well as being useful internal information for planning the year(s) ahead and setting goals for ourselves.

Over the next two years, we aim to increase the total volume from female producers and coffee from indigenous groups. Those are two things we will focus on as we introduce new-to-us origins to the Idle Hands menu.
